My Media.net Account manager is taking me to dinner on Thursday, what questions should I ask?

My Media.net account manager, and her team, will be in my area on a business trip this week. They are taking me out to dinner on Thursday. Should be awesome.

Anyway, seeing as it's unlikely I'll get this opportunity again soon, I'd like to make the most of it. For any of you who have been in a similar situation, are there any specific questions you recommend asking, things to enable in my account (not sure if that's even an option, haha), etc?

If there are questions that you'd like me to ask them, let me know those as well. Don't want to bombard them like an interview, hah. But I'll see what I can do.

Ask them what they think of Media.net getting acquired last month by the Chinese tech co. and what if any significant changes they anticipate coming to the platform and how it's operated.

Just got back from the dinner. It was awesome, they are awesome. Very cool meeting up with them and a completely different experience than what it's it's like working with other ad companies. Great stuff.
what has the biggest impact on RPMs, excluding on site placement

They said it's about the keywords on the page but there are several layers to determining what the best keywords are. One is contextual, another is a rep actually going through to determine what the best keywords are. Sometimes that means that the ads that appear on a page may not be completely related to the page content but reps and/or algorithm have determined a particle ad type gives the highest yield, thus it shows. As you're probably already aware, they also said the things like Financial have high RPM's generally whereas Entertainment is much lower.

Said they don't mind it at all. Said you may see a drop in RPM's but overall revenue will be higher due to more ads being displayed. They actually recommended that I use a slideshow because they have a new product coming out that will insert the ads directly into the slideshow image (similar to how gumgum works).

I didn't even have to ask about this, they just suggested it I try it. They said it's been doing great for Forbes and other big publishers so they are going to start trying with smaller publishers. So I'll be testing that soon.

They said they actually don't know what changes it will bring to US publishers, but they didn't say it would affect anything negatively.

Other notes:
  • They are making a push into more English speaking countries.
  • Another new product they are coming out with is in image ads, similar to gum gum. I told them I tried GumGum and the RPM was too low. The only way it would work for me is if I had like 30 images a page and I don't use that many images. They said that with their product they have 10x the advertising pool so the RPMs are expected to be higher. Plus they can set it to only show on one image (or however many) on a page. So I'll be trying that out as well.
  • They encouraged me to use an exit intent interstitial. I told them my users don't like popups so I'll pass. They said if I change my mind to let them know as it makes quite a bit of money.
  • One of the things I brought up is that getting approved can take a long time and is frustrating. They mentioned they made big changes to the process and often times publishers are getting approved/dissaproved within a day. Having said that, now that I have the inside track (kind of, haha) if you want to get signed up let me know and I'll refer you. Gets me some o dat refferal mohnahz, hah.
  • They asked if I had any plans to promote content during the holiday season with paid ads on Facebook. I said I did. They replied that before I run the ad, I should give them a heads up the day before running the promotion and let them know what page the ads will be for. That way, the rep will optimize the Media.net ads as much as possible for that specific page in order to earn more money on the paid traffic.
 
Oh yeah, just remembered. They said it's still in the works but another product they have planned is something to monetize email subscribers. They didn't go into detail but sounded interesting.
 
Oh yeah, I used a 160x600 sidebar sticky unit with them and it got low RPM. I recently changed it to a 300x250 which is earning twice as much, so that's good. Initially my thought was to use a 300x600 but since it's not one of the "popular" units in the dashboard I figured it was generally a lower earning unit with them. However, last night they actually recommended using a 300x600 as they expect it to do even better than the 300x250. That's probably something many people would assume to be true, but was good to hear it confirmed.

Of course, that could vary by site. So keep that in mind, hah.

Also, they told me their Adsense display ads access ADX so their Adsense ads typically pay better, and have more variety, than regular Google Adsense.
 
Smash that like button if you're going to be taking another look at Media.net after reading this thread.

It sounds like they're trying really hard to shed the image of 'that ad network you try if you get banned from adsense.' I like it. OP delivers, indeed. Thanks @Trankuility
 
Who even uses media.net ?

Myself and lot's of others that have tested and learned that the earnings in their niche can be equivalent or actually higher than with adsense.

They had some free time today so we met up again, this time for drinks.

Some of the bigger publishers are hitting 12million+ pageviews a day. I asked if that was viral sites or sites designed to maximize pageviews. They said no. One of the sites hitting those numbers is actually a health/education site focused on kids.
 
@Trankuility I only have one real question. Did they take you somewhere nice?
I've got the opportunity to go out with them a few times but always turned it down because of schedule. Interested to see how much money they are splashing around on affiliates now they've been acquired.
 
@Prentzz Yes, dinner was at a pretty nice place in downtown SF. Not super ritzy or anything. But a cool spot. They initially asked if I had particular restaurant in mind, so I imagine I could have chosen almost anywhere within reason.
