If I was to create catchy product name for a noob blogging course, I might call it:

The 100/100/100 method or The Tripple Hundred method.

The claim is simple:
  • 100 posts
  • 100.000 words
  • 100 referring domains
and ... just like that, you have a site that will make real money.

I've seen this happen again and again here.

There's nothing revolutionary about it, it's not a method, but I've come to think of this as a sort of idea and motivation of what kind of work effort is required to make a good income from a website.

That's not saying anything about quality of content or links.

What's sad is that the majority of the people who would buy this product wouldn't make it to 100 posts or 100,000 words, let alone 100 referring domains.

Along the same vein, you'd have to find a way to get people to stick it out for 6+ months like the Income School guys did with their course, or else most people would quit on month 3 or 4.

I like your thinking though. This is similar to what @CCarter did with the Avalanche technique (simple gamification) and that got me, a lazy shiny object-seeker, to turn into an article writing robot for 2+ months straight (though I made the mistake of not following the technique in full).

"In a series of studies that began in the late 1960s and continue today, psychologist Walter Mischel, PhD, found that children who, as 4-year-olds, could resist a tempting marshmallow placed in front of them, and instead hold out for a larger reward in the future (two marshmallows), became adults who were more likely to finish college and earn higher incomes, and were less likely to become overweight." https://www.apa.org/monitor/2014/12/marshmallow-test

Not everyone is long term oriented and can do a "boring" task months on end for a reward. Those of who do can benefit greatly from a course teaching them how to make money through blogging. The ones that can't would be the ones that quit through the course. I'm not saying that this is the only explanation -- maybe they saw other opportunities or something came up -- but some people can't stick it through. There's nothing you can do for them, as it's their genetics. They're better suited to be something else than tech workers. The sooner they realize that, the better it'll be for them, if this is their case.

I'd take this another step and call it the 100/200/300/400 method:
  • 100 posts
  • 200 thousand words
  • 300 referring domains
  • 400 days
I'd like to see more linking domains than 100, and I really just wanted to work in the fact that people need to be prepared to work for at least 1 year before things really pop off. 400 days gets you into the exponentially increasing traffic curve.

You'd get indications in the 200+ days range but even that may not be enough to keep you going. It's all about setting the expectation of 1 year work time without an ROI.

@DanielS is right, that needs to be baked into the method somewhere or people will bail (many will regardless because we're often trained to take the smaller, single marshmallow now than take the two giant ones later.

I've mentioned this study @Philip J. Fry brings up in passing over the years, only indirectly, when I talk about "do you want the little ice cream cone now or do you want the big ice cream cone in the sky X years from now?"

It's like on Idiocracy: "Oh yeah, baby, I can wait so good". Don't wait too long, but if a newbie has zero patience and can't delay gratification at all, he's better off getting into something like PPC and landers where there's immediate feedback.

Show me a 100 or more Legit linking domains per year and you have a competitor for any sort of organic play you feel like doing.

What is legit?

Most people buy links one way or the other today.

Baited and or badgered.
You can prolly buy them if you pay enough.

You can see genuine traction immediately if you look into a link profile and check for social mentions. I start paying attention when it looks like it’s self growing with a repeatable process.

I love it...have you done it yourself?

Well, yes, a few times. It's something I've noticed with those sites that take off. 1 year, 100 posts, 100.000 words, 100 referring domains and they end up making some real money.

I agree, it's not easy though and it might take a long time to get going. I still see some people doing natural linking on their own accord. I link to others as well, why shouldn't I?

It is that easy though. You should totally link to others. What kinda nitwit doesn’t.

Bait plus time is the winning formulae.
You can be a little proactive and accelerate things with outreach. If you have a strong persona developed and set your content up to be justifiably linkable there are a lot of easy wins from hitting up participants in your industry. It amazes me how well some half wit agency types manage to screw up something so easy. It’s like they’re deliberately trying to annoy people and get labeled spammers.

Rule of 100 doesn’t seem right for make money online niche. I don’t think it would convert super well with the selling a dream model. Implies to much work. Your prescription of make a 100k word website and bother to promote it totally works but people are looking for short cuts and stories about the fast lane. Not a reminder they need to grind. “Four steps to quick success” fits your target demographics mindset better even if it’s not the sequence they actually need.
