Is it better to start with a small niche or target a broader topic?

When starting a new website, should I focus on one specific topic or cover many related topics?

You should start with a niche and stick with a niche. Gaining topical relevance through indexing and interlinking is a big help, and diluting that doesn't help. If you simply must expand further, stick to one vertical.

For instance, if you feel like you're missing out on opportunities to grow and you have the resources to do so, because you've completely tapped out the cardio-for-women nice with running, Zumba, BodyPump, etc., then you could expand horizontally to yoga and stretching and light weight training. But I wouldn't start bringing nutrition into the mix or parenting and pregnancy.

Stay in the umbrella of Fitness and during your expansion keep it tight nit. I wouldn't bring in body building and strength training and especially not fashion and makeup, of course.

Go with one specific topic first. From a practical standpoint, it stops you from burning out. Writing 30 high-quality, deeply researched articles about one specific thing creates a much better user experience than writing 5 random articles about 6 different topics. Stay inside that single umbrella until you completely exhaust the content ideas!

I completely agree with the idea of starting small and niching down because it is the best way for a new creator or business to avoid competing directly with massive authority sites that dominate the broader markets. Building a topical authority in a tiny sub-niche allows you to build momentum and gain confidence without feeling overwhelmed by giant competitors. Once you dominate that small corner of the web, expanding outwards feels like a natural and much less risky next step for your brand.
