Quick question: Is it always a good idea to keep the domains in the specified niches, or can a domain be used in a niche in an effective manner different than listed?

Hi Daniel.

It's better to use a domain in the same not necessarily niche, but vertical. However you can use other verticals, especially if you build a network - then diversity is the king. Say, you have a main site about tennis bets, then you don't go and build 100 sites about tennis bets, but one site could be about sport news, another one about health, next one about tennis rackets, next one about math statistics... On every site like this you can find an angle to say something about tennis or betting, and you make a post there with such mention and link from there to your main site.

If you speak not about network but single site, it also can be done. First you build or restore the site in the domain's former niche. You wait once it gets indexed well. Then you start mixing in some mentions of your new vertical. For example, if the old site was about skin diseases and the goal is tennis betting, you can post an article about prophylactic of back pain with tennis players, which fits both verticals. Then you post more content about the new vertical, in a separate category. Then when it's indexed and everything, you make it you main category and all the old and now irrelevant content put in some archive category at more than one click from the homepage.

Thank you for such a thorough response! To feed off your response: If a website was in the software category, for example, then creating content about software but in a specific niche would be okay? For example, video editing software, as it is still software, just maybe not the exact same that was written about by the prior domain owner.

Sure, this would be totally ok. Just make the new target pages more or less relevant when redirect the existing backlinks.

What about using a domain to create a new website, then simply archiving the old articles in a hard to find area for visitors? This way, all the content that the website visitor sees is new and relevant to the new sub-niche for the domain, while allowing the existing backlinks to exist to maintain authority, etc. Or, would the ideal scenario be to interlink everything (old articles to new) to pass juice to new pages/posts?
