Why is the death rate in Italy so much more extreme than elsewhere?

Germany so far has 2 deaths in 1200 cases. As of now, no deaths in Scandinavia either, which bringing both together is about 2 deaths in 2000 cases or 0.1% death rate. Belgium, Austria, no deaths either.

Is this just because they're not as advanced in the disease progression or are there local factors at play in Italy (and Iran).

This is Northern Italy as well. Is the Italian health care system really not up to speed?

Viruses can be just like humans
We thrive in certain conditions more than others
Micro-organisms and be more sensitive or more extreme

I dont think they have a full answer yet but it's clear this virus has a 'preferred type'

Greece just closed all schools and Universities for 2 weeks
New York has a county that's being shut down and quarantined now too .... 120+ cases confirmed here

with New York being so DIVERSE of a place for the virus to be active. It could really show us some things.

Lombardy, which was the main part of the country closed down at first, is actually one of the most prosperous regions of Italy (if not the most) and has a relatively strong health system which has been quickly overwhelmed. (They are taking patients by helicopter to other regions which are emptying their hospitals of non-urgent patients and operations.)

An interesting comment from a despairing doctor down there was that they are acting as the canary in the European coal mine and that other countries need to seize the time they have to prepare for what is approaching. (As northern Italy is the next door neighbour with many close connections it is extremely likely that we or Switzerland are the next in line.)

(Austrian govt. just announced a ban on inside gatherings over 100 people and outdoor over 500 plus universities and technical colleges switched to internet lectures.)
 
I suppose the most reasonable take so far is simply that Italy is ahead of the curve.

Particularly when considering that Lombardy is made up of people who are partially genetically descended from germanic people, so the genetics explanation doesn't really explain it. Of course theres been a lot more mixing of the regional genetics these last 100 years.

There could be differences in immunity though. Some northern europeans are believed to be immune to HIV:
1% of people descended from Northern Europeans, particularly Swedes, are immune to HIV infection. These lucky people are homozygous carriers of the mutated gene - meaning that they inherited a copy from both of their parents. Another 10 -15% (the number has even suggested to be 18%) of people with European heritage inherited one copy of the gene.

Didn't they say that this virus looked a lot like HIV?

It's also believe that Europeans have higher immunity to Ebola and Marburg virus, due to the effects of the Black plague, now believed to be some kind of bleeding virus.

So it is not completely out there to speculate, but probably wishful thinking.

It will be very "interesting" to follow these numbers as they skyrocket these days in Northern Europe.
 

This guy on the Joe Roegan podcast , a specialist, quoted a Doctor who says in his hospital they are struggling at this point to a level at which they have to literally decide who has to die and is less useful for their studies / efforts.

sheesh.

By next week. The US will be going through a state of a 'new shock' and either the nay-sayers will be backtracking OR a cure has to be had.

I'm sipping on burdock root and sasparilla tea. Suggest you guys stock up on this.
 
Health system collapse is the issue I'm worried about.

I'm due for some tests and maybe an operation. Not going to happen I predict. All these cancer patients, people with auto-immune disorders, diabetics, smokers, the elderly etc. This thing seems to really target the weak in a very stringent Darwinian way.

I dont think this is the Corona Virus but if it is......................... The panic is about to 'hit home' in the US

All we need is a few stars to go down to this virus and the general population will realize how vulnerable they are (which is true in general b/c people without money are the first to go by typical customary habit)

update; Yup, Rudy Gobert has the CoronaVirus. THe NBA players are quarantined in the arena after having contact with him. It's going to get bad.

Good time to invest in Netfilx and hulu.. internet companies.

Bit of advice. Nobody may take heed to this but it may help you A LOT if things should go left and less than $100.

Buy these organic products (not powders) to have stored in your house. I'm a believer in how well they work from seeing how they flush things out quick, at their start.

1- Sarsparilla root
2- Burdock Root
3- hisbiscus leaves from jamaica
4 -Nettle leaf (tea)

May be a long shot but it's part of some ancient remedy stuff that i read/listened up on. Knocked out every sickness i had since having it.

Stick in a strainer/tea strainer togethr...........brew ............

- boil water
- stick tea mix in & let sit
- sip when warm

Do not overuse. The end.
 
I live in Thailand. Recently moved from Chiang Mai to Hua Hin. Also recently went on a vacation to Phuket and stopped in lots of areas along the way. My girlfriend lives in Bangkok and takes a plane and taxi every weekend to visit me. All these places were some of the first to have confirmed cases of Coronavirus outside of China.

Places where foreigners usually go are pretty empty, malls are ghost towns. Places where Thais tend to go still have lots of people.

My girlfriend recently came down with a a slight cold, slight aches and felt tired. Basically what Hanks said. Lasted only a few days. Was it Corona? Don’t know but its very possible.

Having said that, life is normal - here in one of the hotspots of Corona. The only time I’m reminded of Corona is when I come online and see threads like this - or when I go to “westerner” areas. People are blowing this thing so far out of proportion it’s retarded. And some you guys in this thread are doing exactly that. Not sure if you guys are practicing leaking abilities or trying to drum up business, but cmon now.

As for me, I’m making more travel plans for this year and doubling down on promoting my site. Gonna take up more market share while competitors cut back. When this blows over I’ll be entrenched in a highly competitive market. This is THE perfect time to stop worrying and go HARD.

Without extensive testing, no one really knows how far it has spread. Degree of symptoms vary based on carrier's underlying health and incubation period , so people could be spreading it while looking completely healthy. People won't drop like flies even if they have it.

But one has a low chance of getting infected still if they're young and healthy. Who cares so long as its not in my backyard, amirite?

Not acknowledging how this virus will affect a country's health facilities and the vulnerable is ignorance at the expense of other people's lives, especially when lack of preparation will lead to doctors having to choose between which sick to treat.

At first I thought most people realized he was practicing traffic leaking and stirring pots. So i was it in for the lulz. But something tells me some of these people are actually very dumb.

I got outside every day in South Beach and it’s packed like normal Spring Break.

There is also plenty of toilet paper everywhere I got, but when I come online you think the we are on the verge of The Great Toilet Paper War.

I went to the movie theater on a Tuesday afternoon, place was packed! I was surprised cause normally the place would be empty.

But I realize there are very dumb people in the world and they don’t see the traffic leaking practice. What’s more interesting, and more profitable, is how the stock market is reacting. I’m basically putting in limit orders all day cause if the stock market drops this fast it will sky rocket when it rebounds and lots of people are going to make money off this shit! You are seeing 50% drops in stocks, buy and even a 20% rebound is 20% in very fast returns! This is wild!!

The crazy part is these people are reacting this way to a virus THAT doesn’t KILL!! It’s killing old people that have other underlying diseases.

What is going to happen when a real virus with a 5% or 10% mortality rate gets introduced? The scary part should be how easy it has been it manipulate the public and turn a non-lethal virus into pandemonium.

And why are people so opposed to washing their hands?

Any body with a brain should take 10 mins to research how vaccines are created. If they really introduce one without even human trial timeframe of a year, are you really stupid enough to inject yourself or your kids with that? If you are then you deserve what’s coming.

There is a reason people aren’t countering my arguments. It’s the same reason why in the end people had to admit that buttcoin, I mean bitcoin, would never go mainstream. Echo chambers, and these dumbass investors on wall street seem to live in the same echo chambers as these neckbeards in basements that do not go outside in the first place. They are literally the safest people from corona, they never interact with the outside world in the first place. So why are they so red alert crazy?

I’ll be back and bump this thread like I did the bitcoin thread and ask “what happened?” When this nonsense dies down after the news cycle gets a new juicy thing to talk about.

You guys better get ready for the most intense rebound of the stock market in your lifetime! I’ve been averaging down on MORL and MRRL. I wanted to create a thread but there is just not enough time during trading time for all that.

You can sit here argument with crazy people on the internet, or you can make a ton of money off “the greatest event in our lifetime”. You already know where I’m going to be. :smile:

A 103-year-old grandmother has recovered from the coronavirus following six-day treatment in Wuhan.

The centenarian, Zhang Guangfen, was discharged from the hospital yesterday afternoon.

She is so far the oldest coronavirus patient to recover in China and two years older than the previous recorder-holder, 101.

Ms Zhang was cured within less than a week because 'she did not have many underlying health conditions', her doctor Zeng Yulan told the local press.
 
I think you guys are missing the point.

It's dangerous for TYPES of people. It's clear a great percentage will live.

But now would be a nasty time to find out you have an internal issue like a heart murmur, a respiratory issue, etc. It could be very dangerous.

And if you DO have that or you have older people in your family, it can be dangerous.

It's only killing 3-5% in most countries but it's all about what/WHO you have to lose and/or at risk. Will you be prepared.
